Letter to the church
What We Believe
things happen when people come together. That is exactly what happened when
laity from eight Sheboygan county area churches in the Northeast District –
Circuit 12 of the Wisconsin Conference of the United Methodist Church came
together more than 10 years ago. Originally formed in 2005, the inspiration for
this group of dedicated and committed Christians came from a report by Rev.
Stephen J. Polster entitled, "A Growing Sense of Urgency." In his work, Rev.
Polster states, "Our hope is that… as teams rather than individual clergy and
individual congregations, we will discover new ideas, new skills and renewed
energy (some call it synergy) to fulfill the Great Commission and the mission of
our Annual Conference to, ‘Make Disciples of Jesus Christ.’"
Committee is made up of representatives from the churches* within the Circuit
and is blessed with individuals that have a wide variety of talents, spiritual
gifts and backgrounds. Even with tremendous diversity, the Laity Committee
shares a common mission; "Northeast District – Circuit 12 is a United
Methodist community of faith in service to all. By joining together we are
strengthened to accomplish more than we can do individually." This shared
mission is accomplished, however, without sacrificing the individuality,
programs and needs of each local congregation. The committee’s goal is to
continue to build strong laity, working alongside the clergy, to focus on the
future and to seize emerging opportunities. Committee members network and work
with congregations and clergy throughout the circuit, having fun along the way!
Over the past decade, the group has been instrumental
in making a difference in local communities as well as around the world. The
laity committee has implemented or supported such projects as:
- Educational workshops
- Collection of handmade caps for individuals going through chemotherapy
- Laundry Love – the collection of laundry soap and cash for individuals in
- Media campaigns and the publication of inspirational materials
- Savings souls – the collection of shoes for third world countries; helping
individuals to become self sufficient
- Love INC. (Love in the Name of Christ) of Sheboygan County
- Providing Scholarships for individuals in the seminary
- Conducting food drives to stock local food pantries
- Community outreach – partnering with local Chambers of Commerce, Jaycees
and Salvation Army
- Sponsoring county-wide Youth events including: "The Great Race," "Wildly
Different – Youth Rally" and "Catch the Spirit"
- School Desks for Haiti – Constructed from Basswood grown, harvested,
milled and build by laity within the Circuit and distributed to schools in
Haiti and other third world countries
- And much, much more
Each of the above projects would not have been
possible without all of the churches working together to accomplish more.
Working together allows smaller congregations to realize initiatives which
previous would have been out of reach.
The committee meets the 4th Monday of every
month (except December) at Faith United Methodist Church in Sheboygan Falls.
